Torrent (1926) - Monta Bell - part1

To celebrate Greta Garbo's 100th birthday in September 18th 2005, every friday this month i will dedicate this blog to one of her Yet-To-Be Released-On-DVD movies. As i do in my other blog named : 24 Lies Per Second which is dedicated to "screen captures of old rare movies from vhs", i will focus on one of her movies in 24 frames taken from my personal collection. Before we begin, i want to thank TCMFrance for their nearly complete Garbo Retrospective in october 2004. If you're living in the USA, be thrilled to know that Turner Classic Movies is broadcasting the same great retrospective this very september 2005 !! Check it out you lucky people !!

Torrent aka Ibáñez' Torrent is the first of the 26 movies that Greta Garbo will play for MGM after she left her native Sweden. She was 20.
Monta Bell, the former editor of Chaplin's A Woman of Paris directed it instead of Mauritz Stiller, her mentor with who she did her first movie in 1924 : Gösta Berlings saga.

17 years after this movie, she will be leaving us & finally be let alone (or so !!).

The Cinematographer William H. Daniels will beautifully light her face for her next 24 movies. He has worked previously with legendary director Eric Von Stroheim. In 1958, he will still be around with "Some came Running" starring Frank Sinatra.

As Dean Thompson from The Silents Majority wrote : Garbo's acting compells the audience to look for emotion, rather than anticipate its delivery - it cuts through decades of film performance with a freshness that hasn't dated a bit.

She "compels the audience to look for emotion, rather than anticipate its delivery." What an incisive line! Thanks for posting it.

I've been facinated with Garbo since I was a teen..being born in 1954, this was not due to her being current!!! Thank you for helping keep her alive!
